Clayton County Register
Thursday, February 9, 1893 - Joseph Moine Obituary

On Friday last at his residence in Farmersburg township occurred the death of Joseph Moine, the result of a shot from a revolver by his own hand. As we gather them, the circumstances connected with this sorrowful event are as follows:

For sometime past Mr. Moine has been despondent and the fact that he sold his old home preyed on his mind. On the day of the tragedy Mrs. Moine desired that he should go to St. Olaf with her to see a house they were to purchase. Joe pled that it was too cold and remained at home alone. Some time later in the day, a son-in-law came to the house and finding no one in the rooms, noticed that the cellar door was open. Going down to the cellar, he found Mr. Moine’s body, he having placed a revolver to his temple and fired. His cap had even taken fire from the shot but had been extinguished by the flow of blood. For the past twenty five years, Joe Moine has been known to those who travelled the Elkader and McGregor road, the house being run as a hotel until later years. He always seemed a jovial whole-souled man, generous to all as it was a pleasure to stop and have a social chat with him and Mrs. Moine. From all over the county will come a sad feeling of regret that the mind of a good-hearted old man should become so clouded that the deed was made possible.

The funeral occurred at Clayton Center on Monday last, Reverend Seifert officiating. May an old friend rest in peace.

(The Moines were my great great great grandparents. Their children were Mary (Kluth), Georginietta (McKellar), and Jules. The Moines ran a hotel for weary travellers as stated here. The story passed down is that Joseph used to haul wagon loads of fresh oysters from the Mississippi River and store them in the basement. Cold salt water was sprinkled on them to keep them fresh. His wife, Mary, cooked oyster stew to feed their hungry guests.)
