Esther Freda Meta Burroughs, 86, of Farmersburg, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center, Postville, following a long illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Glenwood Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home, McGregor. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Monday at the church.

She was born on Oct. 17, 1917, in Clayton County, daughter of George and Ida (Reinhardt) Meana.

She married Kenneth Burroughs on Aug. 26, 1935, in Decorah. Kenneth worked in construction for 30 years, so they lived in Colorado, Oklahoma, South Carolina and in Waterloo, Cedar Falls and McGregor. They moved to Farmersburg in 1974.

Esther loved to go to garage sales and had many large gardens, which she shared with her family and friends. She also watered the flower pots in Farmersburg. Esther loved to help and give things to others.

Surviving are her husband, Kenneth; four children, Sandra (Ron) Beversdorf, of Dubuque, Richard (Patricia) Burroughs, of Guttenberg, Sharon (David) Wieland, of Cedar Falls, and Linda (Larry) Hulsing, of Monona; granddaughter, Toni Wandling, who was raised by Esther and Kenneth; 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; and five siblings, Dorothy Wilke, of Postville, Edward Meana and George (Bonnie) Meana, both of Fennimore, Wis., Robert (Beverly) Meana, of Platteville, Wis., and Mildred (Orville) Knapp, of Giard.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Lloyd Meana.
