Gustav A. Sabbann
Funeral services for Gustav A. Sabbann were held at the Oelke funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30 and at the Peace Evangelical Church and Reformed Church at 2 o’clock. The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiated. Burial was in the Farmersburg cemetery.
Mr. Sabbann became ill about four years ago and last February suffered a stroke and since then his health has steadily declined. He died in a Dubuque hospital Monday, April 28, 1952, at the age of sixty-four years, four months and nine days.
Gustav August Sabbann was born December 18, 1887, at Luana, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Sabbann. He received his education in the schools near his home. For a time he and his brother Ewald operated a farm near Farmersburg. On February 22, 1911, he was united in marriage to Minnie M. Kluth at the farm of her parents near St. Olaf.
In 1922 Mr. and Mrs. Sabbann moved to Elkader where Mr. Sabbann served as manager of the Commission company, now the Elkader Cooperative company and for a time he drove an oil truck. In 1933 they returned to their farm in Read township where they remained until 1943 when they returned to Elkader which has since been their home.
During his life Mr. Sabbann served as director of the Mecklenberg school board, director of the creamery at st. Olaf and also secretary of the Elkader creamery for a short time. He was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church of Elkader and served a full four years on the council.
He is survived by his wife, and two daughters, Mrs. Clyde (Rosalyn) Smith, Elkader, and Mrs. Eldo L. (Dolores) Meyer, St. Olaf; one sister, Miss Melinda Sabbann, Monona; also three grandchildren.
Preceding him in death was a son who died in infancy, a granddaughter, Judith L. Meyer who died two years ago at the age of eight years, and a brother Ewald who died a year ago last October.
Pallbearers were: C. H. Bennett, John Downie, Ole Embretson, Elliot Neuhring, C.L. Crider, John Machl.
Relatives from a distance who attended were: Mr. and Mrs. Donald Tayek, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Houg, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Funk, Mrs. Ewald Sabbann, Miss Melinda Sabbann, Mrs. Fred Klieforth, Monona; Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Kluth, Cedar Rapids: Mr. and Mrs. Arno Lenth, Marcus: Mr. and Mrs. Martin Lenth, Battle Creek; Mr.s Ruth Hook, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Schmitt, Dubuque.
