Frances Jane Ehrhardt, a long-time resident of Elkader, died at age 98 in her Iowa City home on Thursday, October 26, 2006. A memorial service will be held in her honor at the Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader on Sunday, November 5, at 1:30 p.m. A reception will be held in the church basement immediately afterwards until 3:30 p.m. Memorials will go to the Elkader Historical Society Endowment Fund.
Mrs. Ehrhardt was born on April 24, 1908, in Milford, Iowa, daughter of John S. Winton and Jane Woods Winton and was raised there. She followed her sister, Eleanor Winton Gilje, as an early female graduate of the Iowa State University in Ames and later to Elkader. After several years as a high school teacher, she was united in marriage on May 27, 1938, to Leroy J. Ehrhardt who preceded her in death by exactly four years. She lived in Elkader for 67 years until moving to Iowa City recently to be closer to her family.
Mrs. Ehrhardt took an active part in various church activities and manifested a keen interest in community affairs. She was a quietly effective leader in her organizations. Collecting antiques and preserving Elkader's history was a passion for her. She was a co-founder and benefactor of the Elkader Historical Society and worked for the placement of historic Elkader buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.
Mrs. Ehrhardt is survived by three loving sons, Charles and wife Judy of Tallahassee, Florida, James and wife Pamela of Iowa City, and Louis of Scottsdale, Arizona. She delighted in her five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Words originally written for her grandmother are appropriate. "No one who knew her will forget her, and to each one her memory is something dear and lovely: an influence toward making them more kindly and helpful, more faithful and true, She is gone from among us, but she has left us new ideas, new inspirations; she will live in our hearts and our lives."
Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader is in charge of arrangements.
