Carl Hinrich Andresen, the son of Carsten and Catharine (Willers) Andresen, b. 5 Nov 1834 in Schulp, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and Margaret D. Thomsen, b. 19 April 1834 in Cleve, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, came to Clayton County in 1867. They were married in Hennstedt, Germany 16 May 1858.

Carl was a hotel keeper in East Elkport (Garber). After his death from cancer in Dec 1887, his wife Margaret continued to operate their German Hotel until it burned. She was also afflicted with cancer and finding no relief, went to live with her sister Mrs. Peter Nichols in Garnavillo where she died on 29 Jan 1892. Mr. and Mrs. Andresen are buried in Elkport, Iowa.

They were the parents of seven children, Margareta Ida b. 2 Aug 1862 Cleve, Schleswig; Katherine, b. June 1863, Cleve; Frederick C. b. Aug 1864; Dora b. 1869, d. Apr 1871, bd. Elkport, Iowa; Henry C. b. about 1870; William Peter b. 27 June 1871; and Sophia b. 1873.

Margaret Ida married Herman Knoernschild of Dubuque. Katherine married Adam Mueller of Dubuque. Frederick married Louisa V. Voss, the daughter of John and Dora (Addleman) Voss, 2 Dec 1892 at Littleport, Iowa. Henry married Emma Bowman, the daughter of Emanuel and Mary (Altman) Bowman 7 Dec 1892. Sophia married John P. DeFontaine, the son of Adolph and Maggie (Smith) DeFontaine of Dubuque, 25 May 1899 at the home of her brother Frederick in Volga. William married Bertha Palen, the daughter of Nicholas and Barbara (Fohrman) Palen of Dubuque 29 June 1903.
