Catherine Thomsen Heesch (the daughter of Peter Thomsen and Elsabea Reiher) b. 28 Feb 1824 in Cleve, Holstein, Germany, and her second husband Frederick Schoellerman, b. 30 July 1824 in Osterbosse, Parish Telliegstaut, Norder Ditmarschen, Holstein, Germany came to Clayton Twp. in 1854 with her two daughters, Elsabea Dorothea Heesch and Weipke Katherine Heesch, and their son Frederick Schoellerman. Catherine Thomsen's first husband, Peter Jacob Heesch had died in a Rendsburg hospital in 1850.

Elsabea, b. 3 Sept 1849, and Weipke Katherine, b. 5 Oct 1850, were both born in Cleve. Weipke d. 11 June 1854 in Guttenberg, Iowa. Elsabea married Henry Oelke. (A son was born to Catherine Thomsen and Peter Jacob Heesch on 29 Aug 1847. He was given the name Johann Hinrich and he is believed to have died in Cleve where he was born.)

Frederick Schoellerman worked as a carpenter around the Garnavillo and Farmersburg areas; his wife Catherine was a midwife. Frederick W., the son of Frederick and Catherine, married Julia Kuenzel, the daughter of John H. and Ann Kuenzel, on the 17 Dec 1874 at Garnavillo. Their children born in Garnavillo included Julius Frederick Henrich b. 5 Nov 1875; William Henrich Ludwig b. 3 Nov 1877; Herbert Peter b. 12 Dec 1879; and Alfred Peter b. 29 June 1883. Three children were born in South Dakota, Benjamin Henry b. 13 June 1885 in Iroquois, and twins Olga and Ora b. Oct 1894. An eighth child, Cora, died in childhood.

Frederick Schoellerman Sr. died in 1905 and is buried in Sioux Valley, Minnesota.

On the 4 Nov 1897 Catherine Schoellerman was married to Peter Bartels, the son of David and E. (Dornheim) Bartels, at Farmersburg. His first wife had died in Germany. He married the widow Claudina Schoellerman Hinsch whose first husband Henry Hinsch had also died in Germany. He and Claudina came to Farmersburg from Germany to be close to her children, Charles Hinsch and Claudina Hinsch Benjegerdes. Claudina Schoellerman Hinsch Bartels died 6 Mar 1897 and is buried in Farmersburg as is Peter Bartels who died 24 Nov 1908.

Catherine Thomsen Heesch Schoellerman Bartels died 23 Feb 1905 and is buried in the Garnavillo Cemetery beside her sister and her sister's husband, Ancha (Thomsen) and Peter Nichols (Catherine's tombstone reads simply Mrs. Schoellerman and the names of her sister and brother-in-law are also on the tombstone). Another sister, Margaret, the wife of C. H. Andresen, and a brother, Peter Thomsen also settled in Clayton County.
