In Response To: Re: Ruth Leavitt Stark McCann Hallier (Chrystal k Mcalister)

According to Ruth's delayed birth record filed in 1943 by her mother, Ruth was born in Waterloo, Black Hawk County, IA 23 Jul 1908.

Her parents were Russell Stark, b abt 1869 in Tama County Iowa and Minerva Mehaney born abt 1872 in Minonk IL. Ruth was the second child born of the couple and her father was a brakeman, I assume for the railroad of which Waterloo had plenty.

Dr. Carl Bickley was the attending physician, deceased as of this date, who filed to file the birth certificate. Minerva was married to a Hinton at this time and lived on Linden Street in Waterloo.

In the 1910 census the family was in Livingston, Park County, Montana. In that census Russell and Minerva aka Minnie had been married 6 years, Minnie was on her second marriage, mother of three children, three living including Ruth's older sister Merle who was 4 and an older half brother 9 year old Mark, listed as Russell's step son.

Although Russell was born in Iowa both his parents were born in Scotland according to this census while Minnie's father was born in IL like she was, her mother was born in Iowa. He is still a brakeman with the railroad.

In both the 1920 and 1925 census reports, Minnie and her children were with her, back in Waterloo and she was married to a John Hinton. Ruth is called Hinton in 1920 and Stark in the 1925. Mark is called Mahone in 1920 so I suspect Minnie's first marriage was to a Mahaney and her actual maiden name is Leavitt. Both Mark and Merle were gone in the the 1925 census.

According to Find a Grave, Ruth died in 1949, her father died in 1948 in Washington, her half brother Mark died after surgery in 1943 and her mother died in 1950. Other than her father in Washington, the rest are buried in Waterloo. The name in the paper for Mark was McHarrey.

When Ruth died she was survived by two sons John J and Donald P and a daughter Virginia. I see no Richard listed. Are you sure you got the right family?

I found the following marriage record for Russell and Minerva:

Name: Minerva Mahary
Gender: Female
Race: White
Birth Date: 1875
Birth Place: Illinois
Marriage Date: 21 Sep 1904
Marriage Place: Waterloo, Black Hawk, Iowa
Marriage Age: 29
Father: John Mahary
Mother: Kate Bennington
Spouse: Russell Stark
FHL Film Number: 1034536
Reference ID: 2:3WKTGPW
and

Name: Russell Stark
Gender: Male
Race: White
Birth Place: Tama Co., Iowa
Marriage Date: 21 Sep 1904
Marriage Place: Waterloo, Black Hawk, Iowa
Father: John Stark
Mother: Margaret Pallerson
Spouse: Minerva Mahary
FHL Film Number: 1034536
Reference ID: 2:3WKTGPW
Unfortunately it says that this is Minerva's first marriage unless Mark was illegitimate and carried his mother's maiden name?

In 1909 Russell had applied to be a Brakeman with the Northern Pacific Railroad, Livingston Station, MT. It contains a wonderful description of him, 5' 7 3/4", 165lbs, Sandy hair and light blue eyes. It even has his family's names including his parents and address in Waterloo.

Unfortunately he was fired 17 Feb 1911 for being absent without permission.

In 1900 he was living in a lodging house in Fayette County and was born Aug 1874. In 1895 he was living in Waterloo and it says he was born in Grundy County. Census information is notoriously inaccurate but you have lots of clues to work with.

In 1900 the Meharry family was also in Fayette County. Minerva was in the household with her widowed mother Kate, one sister, Daisy and two brothers, Frank head of household and Robert age 11. Down the page a few lines is a likely additional brother to Minerva, named Wylie Meharry.

In 1880 the John and Margaret Stark family were living on Mullen Avenue in Waterloo. Children David 10, William 9, Russell 6, Lilly 2 and Mattie 11 mos, born Jul 1879.

There are lots of records available on this family. Hope this has been of help to you.
