there are townships named des moines in these iowa counties - boone, dallas, jasper, Jefferson lee, pocohantas , polk, van buren - all or many perhaps names for the des moines river which runs thru southeastern iowa. you should check to see if there was some small community in des moines township in lee county named des moines
