I grew up in Mt Pleasant and I assumed it was for the mentally ill. I recently found I had a great grandmother who passed away there. And on the other side of the family my own grandmother. My own grandmother lived in the Iowa City area and she was sickly and depressed due to her illness. There were not the care units, the nursing homes, etc that we have now. I would not assume they were mentally ill. I would maybe think they needed extra care and the family needed someone to manage that. I do believe there are some lists that I have seen. Check the census and just keep researching. And if that doesn't help....realize the insane part was not always the case...medical science, depression drugs have helped many dear souls in recent years.
