In Response To: Where is/was Irish Ridge in Iowa? (Sandy Frame)

I've never been able to find Irish Ridge on a map, and think it is probably
an old descriptive term rather than an actual location. "Irish Ridge" area
is probably in the southern tier of Allamakee co. townships -- probably Fairview or
Linton -- and it may cover quite a large area.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has found 'Irish Ridge' marked on a map of Allamakee co. since this is a frequent question.

On this board, there was a discussion about the location back in April. The message exchange starts about half-way down the page
with the subject Irish Ridge, although the question was not fully resolved.

I checked the 1870 census & find William Errington (age 40), Elizabeth (age 35) &
children William (age 12), Mary (age 9), John (age 6) & George (age 5
months, b. in Jan) living in Paint Creek twp. (Ion postoffice). Enumerated
8/2/1870. William is a farmer. Wm & Eliz. were born in Ireland, the 3
oldest children in PA and George in Iowa.

Their neighbors seem to be
predominately Irish. Other surnames on the census page are Corcoran,
Lowell, O'Hare, Fitzpatrick, McCarty, Morris & McDonald. The Errington's
are on the page between J. Morris & James McDonald.

On the 1872 plat map I find J. Morris & James McDonald in sections 35 & 36
of Paint Creek twp. & Wm. Errington in section 5 of Linton twp. Most
likely William didn't move between the 1870 census & the map of 1872 -- he
was probably enumerated as living in Paint Creek twp. along with his
neighbors since they all lived right on the twp borders. On the Allamakee
co. webpage giving Linton twp. land-owners ..... William is shown as
'Ernu???' by the transcriber. The map was probably
difficult for him to read the surname - but it is clear on my copy so I've
edited the page.

I hope this gives you something to go on in your family search.
