You've probably already found it, but for the benefit of others reading this query thread - Maud's obit is posted on the Clayton co. obit board. Sadly, it does not mention Clifford.Even though Clifford is buried with surname Spores, he was still using the surname Portwine in 1920, so I doubt that John Spores adopted him. It also seems odd to me, that if he was the legitimate son of Maud & Eugene Clute, that he does not have the surname Clute on the 1910 census. I think the 'most likely' scenario is that he was Maud's illegitimate son, although there are other possibilities.
