Hi Diana,
I checked the census records and found the following info. that will answer some questions and raise even more.1910 U.S. census, Millville twp. Clayton county, IA, shows Clifford Portwine, age 5, boarder, b. IA, parents b. IA and Maud Clute, age 27, (relationship is either 'wife of brother' or '? of boarder'), married 3 yrs, mother of 2 w/1child living, occupation: hand girl, working out ..... both in the household of George W. Welsh. The Welsh family members are Alice M., wife, age 31 and children Leona (13), Norman (9) & Martha (6)
1920 U.S. census, Lafayette twp., Allamakee county, IA, shows 'stepson' Clifford L. Portwine, age 16, in the household of John W. (35) & Maud M. (37) Spores. The other children in the home all have surname Spores: Lenora M. (9), Dorthy A. (6), Alfred W. (3y 9m) and Lila M. (1y 8m). John was a farmer, and all in the family were born in Iowa. (Other census' give John's birthplace as Wisconsin)
On the 1925 Iowa State Census, the family is still in Layfayette twp.:
John, head, 30, b. WI, parents: Dan Spores & Ratchel Parsons (parents were married in Colesburg, IA)
Maggie, wife, 40, b. IA, parents: Edward Portwine & Margrete Zenon (parents were married in Osterdock, IA)
Lenora, 14, daughter
Dorothy, 11, daughter
Alfred, 8, son
Lila, 6, daughter
Marcella, 4, daughter
Carl, 1, son
The parents of all of the children are John & Maggie, who were married in Cassville, WISharyl
