MERRITT HEWITT was born in Erie County, Ohio, on June 7, 1843. His family moved to Iowa County, Iowa, when he was ten years old, but his parents were both deceased by the time he was thirteen. He later served in the Civil War and upon its conclusion he returned home, where he married Elizabeth L. Coats in 1868. Merritt Hewitt and his family moved to Brighton Township in 1875 and purchased the eighty acres of the east half of the northeast quarter of Section 22 and built a new house on this land in 1882. The Hewitts had four children as of 1884; May, Edwin, Ray and G. W. Hewitt. Merritt Hewitt was elected Brighton Twonship assessor in 1880 and held the office for a number of years.
