JOSEPH K. HERBERT was born in Hardin County, Ohio, on July 24, 1853. He was the son of Joseph R. Herbert. When J. K. Herbert was fourteen years old, the family moved to Brighton Township, Cass County, and located on land in Sections 2 and 4. He married Maria Lynch on October 15, 1874, and they had six children - Melville, Roy, Laura, Ralph, Florence and Ruth. Joseph K. Herbert and his wife lived with his parents until 1878, when his father gave him 80 acres of land in Section 2, where the young couple subsequently raised their family.
