J. L. HARVEY was born in Muscatine County, Iowa, on February 3, 1849. His family moved to Lettsville, Iowa, when he was ten years old, and his father operated a dry goods store. J. L. Harvey married Jennie Thompson on May 12, 1872, and in the next year bought his father's store, and operated it until 1878, when he moved to Marne. The firm of Harvey Brothers was established in Marne in that year on the corner of Washington and Second Streets and carried a line of dry goods, clothing, and boots and shoes. Groceries were sold from the store for a short time but were later dropped from the inventory. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey had four children - Howard, Roy, George and Gracie. J. L. Harvey became the Marne Postmaster in June, 1879, and held the office for a number of years, with the post office quartered in the Harvey Brothers store building.
