J. D. Thebiay died Sunday afternoon in a Fort Dodge hospital following a short illness. Mr. Thebiay suffered a heart attack the previous Sunday, and his condition had been regarded as serious from the beginning.

Had he lived until November 23, Mr. Thebiay would have been 76. He has lived in Troy and Eagle Grove townships since he was four years of age with the exception of about 12 years when he traveled in foreign countries as a representative for a farm equipment company.

He is survived by his wife and three children. One son, Justin, and one daughter, Mrs. Bernard Moklebust, of this city, and a daughter Mrs. Helen Fouts of Anchorage, Alaska. Also, one brother and eight sisters, three in this community, Mrs. L. E. Beer, Mrs. O. A. Stryker of this city, and Mrs. Inez Bancroft of Clarion.

In the city for the funeral services were a brother-in-law and sister, Mrs. Purd Phelps of Rapid City, S. D.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock in the Congregational church. Rev. Walter Ross officiated, and burial was in Rose Hill cemetery. The Masonic service was conducted by Bower Lodge, Tuesday evening, at the Kastler Funeral Home.

Obituary

Joseph D. Thebiay, son of Juste and Mary Thebiay, was born November 23, 1873 at Compton, Ill. He moved to Eagle Grove with his parents at the age of four years. He had been a resident of this community most of the time since.

From 1899 to 1911, he traveled in Canada, Africa, Europe, and South America, besides parts of the United States for the Plane Manufacturing Company and International Harvester Company.

He was married to Ethel Mathews, June l, 1911, and returned to the farm. Three children were born to this union. After eight years he moved to town and entered the real estate and insurance business. In 1928 he returned to the farm. He moved back to town in the fall of 1946.

He was baptized in the Roman Catholic church but maintained a Protestant preference. He was a member of Bower Lodge No. 464 A.F. & A.M. and of the Chapter, Council, and Commandery, having served as High Priest of the Chapter. He was also a Past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

He has been a township trustee of Troy township, a township committeeman of the AAA farm program, member of the Eagle Grove city council, and during and after World War I he was active with the Red Cross, besides acting on war bond drives for several years.

He was a man of Christian character, accepting large community responsibility cheerfully.

He is survived by his wife, his son Justin J. Thebiay of Eagle Grove, two daughters, Elizabeth R. Moklebust of Eagle Grove, and Helen Fouts of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother, John Thebiay of Dallas, Texas; eight sisters, Mrs. Mary Phelps of Rapid City, S. D., Mrs. Lydia Smithy, Hollywood, Calif., Mrs. Sara Davis, Denver, Colo., Mrs. Alice Beer, Eagle Grove; Mrs. Carrie Stryker, Eagle Grove; Mrs. Emma Jones, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Inez Bancroft, Clarion, Iowa; Mrs. Berniece Colfrey, Kansas City, Mo.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward M. Thebiay and Jesse F. Thebiay, also two sisters who died in infancy. He leaves beside many other relatives.
