Mary Hansena Hobbett
14 November 1889 ---- 11 May 1948

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Evangelical Lutheran church for Miss Mary Hobbet, who died May 11th in a Fort Dodge hospital. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Mary Hansena Hobbet was born to the parents, Ole and Carrie Hobbet in DeKalb County, Ill., Nov. 14, 1889; and died at the Lutheran Hospital, Fort Dodge, Iowa, Tuesday afternoon, May 11, 1948, at the age of 58 years, 5 months, and 27 days. She received the Christian baptism in the Bethany Lutheran Church, Leland, Illinois. In February 1902 she came with her parents to Blairsburg, Iowa, where her mother died that same year. The following spring her father moved with his family to near Eagle Grove, and in 1905 they moved into their present home in Eagle Grove.

In 1907, her father was united in marriage to Miss Hanna Berg, who became a kind and understanding mother to the five motherless children. Mary confessed her Christian faith by confirmation in the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church during the pastorate of the late O. R. Sletten, November 27, 1904.

She graduated from the Eagle Grove high school with the class of 1908 and taught in the Rural Public schools. She studied at the Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and earned the Bachelor of Arts Degree, later studied at the University of Iowa, and earned the Master of Arts degree. She has taught in the Eagle Grove schools for a continuous period of twenty years. For several years past she was principal of the West Side grades and taught in the Junior College of Eagle Grove, resigning her position only a few weeks ago because of failing health.

Mary was a kind and helpful person, almost exceptionally faithful in all things which she undertook to do. She was a very able teacher, her presence in the school room commanded respect, a mere look from her kind face was sufficient to clam the most restless boy or girl. Her pupils loved her. She was a devout Christian who believed her Bible was given for to live by. She gave freely and willingly of her time and talent in loving service to her Saviour, Jesus Christ and his church, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible school and working in the various activities of her church.

She is now survived by her stepmother, Mrs. O. O. Hobbet, and by one brother, Carl Hobbet of Glenn Ellyn, Illinois, also by two sisters, Mrs. Anna Ganong, Northampton, Mass., and Mrs. Selma Carlson, Jamestown, N. Y., also by two nephews and by five nieces, and a large number of friends and relatives.
