Sample Cooper Mitchell
11 December 1855 ---- 2 November 1911

Sample Cooper Mitchell was born on December 11, 1855, in Carroll, Illinois, to Rebecca (Isenberg or Akenberger) Mitchell, age 39, and Samuel Mitchell, age 42. Sample was the baby in a family of eight children.

His mother, Rebecca, passed away on October 7, 1859, in Carroll, Illinois, at the age of 43. Sample was just four. Rebecca was buried at Arnold's Grove Cemetery near Mount Carroll, Illinois.

Sample grew to adulthood and married May Lincoln in Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois, on September 24, 1879, when he was 23 years old. They had at least three children.

The couple lived briefly in Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois, then moved to Eagle Grove, Wright County, Iowa where Sample continuing to work as a blacksmith.

May passed away at Eagle Grove on June 7, 1885, at the age of 23. They had been married five years. Her body was returned for burial near her birth family at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois.

Sample next married Hattie Ann Fothergill in Eagle Grove on April 10, 1889, when he was 33 years old. Hattie was 19.

A daughter, Helen Elizabeth, was born on July 5, 1892, in Eagle Grove, Iowa.

His father, Samuel, passed away on December 24, 1897, in Carroll County, Illinois, at the age of 84. He was laid to rest with his deceased wife at Arnold's Grove Cemetery.

Sample and Hattie had a second daughter, Florence, in 1909 in Iowa.

On September 21, 1911, Sample made his Last Will and Testament. It left all to Harriett unless she remarried. The will also directed disposition of his assets after Harriett's death.

Sample died on November 2, 1911, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, when he was 55 years old. He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Hattie was buried there as well when she passed on April 1, 1947 at the age of 77.
