Harriet Ann Fothergill Mitchell
24 June 1869 ---- 1 April 1947

Harriett Ann Fothergill Mitchell was born June 24, 1869 on a farm near Traer, Tama County, Iowa. She was the daughter of English parents. Her father was Robert Fothergill from Yorkshire, England, and her mother, Mary Dinsdale from near Leeds, England. This couple was reared and married in Canada, later moving to Iowa.

In 1882 the family moved to Eagle Grove. On April 3, 1889 she was united in marriage to Sample Cooper Mitchell. With this marriage she took over the care of three motherless children, who are now Miss Carrie Mitchell of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Mary Clow of Winona, Minn., and L. S. Mitchell of Paullina, Iowa. Mrs. Mitchell also became the mother of three children of her own, Catherine, who died in infancy, Miss Helen Mitchell, Eagle Grove, and Mrs. Florence Rossiter of Glen Ellyn, Ill.

She became a member of the Methodist church in 1893, in which she was a devoted member and worker for almost fifty years. She was the last of the charter members of Class 16 of the Methodist church and a member of Rebekah lodge.

She was noted for her kindness and a serenity of spirit, which made her many friends and much respected during the sixty-five years she lived in Eagle Grove.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sample C. Mitchell, in 1911, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Jane Carlton in 1939. Her sister, Mrs. Mina Frey of Eagle Grove, and a brother, L. D. Fothergill of Los Angeles survive. Her five children, seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren all living.

Mrs. Mitchell's mother, Mrs. Mary Fothergill, made her home with Mrs. Mitchell during the later years of her life, and she passed away on April 7th, 1927.

She had been failing slowly in health for the past few years. Tuesday, April 1, she died quietly while asleep at the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 7 days.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church and burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.
