Leroy Gayle Stearns
25 June 1931 ---- 5 December 2013

LeRoy G. Stearns, 82, went home to his Lord on Thursday, December 5, 2013. LeRoy, “George,” “Dad,”, “Grandpa” was known as a man of the highest integrity who loved his family and friends in a way that was unconditional. LeRoy was compassionate, generous and willing to do anything he could to help anyone he could in any way that he could.

Born June 25, 1931 in Rutland, Iowa he married and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Florence Stearns. They have three surviving children, Kathy Stearns of Keller, Cindy Sullivan (husband Mike Sullivan) of Abilene and Michael Stearns (wife Leslie Stearns) of Wimberley. Three brothers, a sister and a fourth child, Patrick, preceded LeRoy in death. LeRoy and Florence have four grandchildren: Matthew and Michael Sullivan of Abilene, Dawn Spruill (husband Billy Spruill) of Abilene and Daniel Froh of Fort Worth. In addition they have been blessed with two great grand-children, Cherokee and Hannah Betancourt of Abilene.

LeRoy earned a BBA degree from Texas Christian University and a Master’s Degree from Abilene Christian University. LeRoy was among those that made the Greatest Generation what it is. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant. He worked in Civil Service with the Internal Revenue Service and Auditor General’s Office. His total years working for the USA exceeded 30 years. In all endeavors LeRoy evidenced a commitment to the United States of America and willingness to give and sacrifice at any level for this country he loved so much. He loved our flag and what it represents. He supported veterans in all branches of the service and paid honor to all who joined him in sacrificing for peace and freedom for all Americans.

LeRoy was an avid golfer and exemplified the “love of the game.” He believed that golf was a “gentleman’s game” and always cared for the course as if it were his own and extended polite treatment to other golfers without exception. The same could easily be said about the way he treated friends and strangers alike in every area of his life.

LeRoy was a husband, father, grandfather and friend who had few equals. Perhaps his greatest quality is that he listened and showed genuine care to every person he spoke with whether friend or stranger. His family and friends have been greatly blessed to know such a man who simply cannot be replaced but who now lives in eternity with his Heavenly Father.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels or the charity of your choice. Memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 8 at 2:00pm at North’s Funeral Home at 247 Orange Street with visitation to follow.
