John Bakker
12 June 1917 ---- 4 December 1993

John Bakker died Saturday, December 4, 1993 at his home in Dows at the age of 76.

Funeral services for John Bakker were held from the Abundant Life Chapel in Dows on Tuesday, December 7 with Reverend Edward Akins officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Elledge Funeral Home in Dows was in charge of arrangements.

He was born in Butler County near Aplington June 12, 1917 to Henry and Jantena Luppen Bakker. He was raised in and around Aplington and received his education in the Aplington Schools. He worked for a number of years for Willeke and Sons in Aplington.

On April 28, 1939 he was united in marriage to Arliene Sheffield in the Methodist Parsonage in Aplington. After their marriage they made their home in California and in 1945 moved to Manilla, Iowa where he was in the electrical appliance business. They moved to Dows in 1950 where he was employed by Anderson Supply for 19 years and later was employed by Farmers Co-op until his retirement in 1983.

Survivors include his wife, Arliene of Dows; four sons: Douglas and wife Lora of Brentwood, California; Dennis and wife Terri of Dows; Donald and wife Nancy of Clarion and John and Lora of Dows; one daughter, Deborah Mandal and husband John of Dows; 11 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; one brother, Melvin and wife Lois of Parkersburg and a sister, Tillie Muller of Aplington. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Fred and Harm and a grandson, Robert.

John was a charter member of the Abundant Life Chapel where he served as a deacon.
