Max Reuben Banwell, 92, of Clarion, died April 27, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines after residing briefly at USA Healthcare Center in Clarion.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 3rd at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Clarion. Graveside services will be held at the Dows Fairview Cemetery shortly after the service.

Max Reuben Banwell was born January 30, 1910 in Dows, the son of Arthur and Mabel Huntington Banwell. He attended and graduated from the Dows Community School as well as attended and graduated from Iowa City with degrees in biochemistry and music. Max had two years of internship left before becoming a medical doctor when the Great Depression forced him to leave medical school. He then took up farming and married Anne Margaret Croft on February 25, 1937 in Iowa City.

Max was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Clarion and was a Bible enthusiast. After losing his sight, he continued "reading" the Bible through audio tapes.

Max was well-known throughout the community in his earlier years as an accomplished musician for the organ and piano. In years past he had traveled with his family all over the United States and Canada to various Bible conventions to play in orchestras. Music was very much a big part of his life and he entertained family and friends for many years with his beautiful style of playing.

Max is survived by six children: Bruce Banwell and wife, Sherry; Victoria Smith; John Banwell and wife, Cassie; Leigh Banwell and wife, Sherry; Arlan Banwell and wife Linda and Arvilla Dencklau and husband, Regie; 18 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne; his parents; stepmother, Vera Draves Banwell; two brothers and two sisters.
