Obituary
(By Rev. J. J. Severtson)

John O. Johnson was born Oct. 16, 1858 in LaSalle county, Ill. And passed away from this life at his home in Eagle Grove, Iowa Sunday morning, July 4th, 1937 at 5:30 o’clock, at the age of 78 years, eight months, and 18 days.

At the age of four years, he came with his parents to Benton county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. He was united with Christ in baptism, received instruction, and confessed his Christian faith.

In 1883 he was united in marriage to Annie Belle Thompson and that same year they moved to Eagle Grove, where they have since resided. He now leaves to mourn his death, his wife and four children, Wm. Elmer Johnson, Pierre, S. D., Vinnie J. Christensen, Mason City, Verna Dearth, Eagle Grove, and Lee J. Johnson, Long Beach, Calif, and three grandchildren, James, Robert, and Hildreth. One son passed away in infancy. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. J. C. Olson, Linn Grove, Iowa, Mrs. Carrie Weland and Mrs. Gustave Langquist, both of Minneapolis, Minn.

Mr. Johnson was a highly respected citizen, keenly interested in the community and city where he lived. He was manager of Frudden Lumber co. in Eagle Grove for many years. Mr. Johnson was also a member of the public-school board for several years, also treasurer of the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church, an active member of several building and reconstruction committees of the church. He was a faithful worshiper at the regular church service as long as he was able and supported the work of the church liberally.

For several years, Mr. Johnson has been in failing health and on July 2 he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he did not regain consciousness. He passed away quietly Sunday morning. We feel that the family has lost a kind and sympathetic husband and father and the community has lost a faithful and conscientious citizen. May God bless his memory.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the church of which he for many years was a member. Burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery.

Those who attended the funeral from out of town, Henry Tuttle and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Tow of Norway, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John Olson and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Kischer of Linn Grove; Mrs. Gus Gangquist and Mrs. Carrie Weland of Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Severin Hovey, Mr. and Mrs. Gangstead and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Knutson, and Mrs. Henry Gerean of Bode; Wm. E. Johnson, Pierre, So. Dak.; Harry R. Dearth, Long Point, Neb.; Mrs. Vinnie Christenson; and son of Mason City.
