Charles Andrew “Charley” Conklin
6 November 1859 ---- 28 April 1936

Chas. Conklin, 76, died from injuries sustained at the Great Western depot early Wednesday morning. Mr. Conklin was night baggage, mail, and expressman at the depot. It is evident that he placed his truck too close to the track and the engine hit the truck which in turn struck Mr. Conklin, fracturing his skull, pelvis, and inflicting internal injuries from which he died about an hour after the accident. The west bound train was 15 minutes late, arriving about 2:40 a.m. None of the train crew saw the accident but found Mr. Conklin and the wreckage of the truck after the train stopped. Night Marshal Faust was near the scene of the accident but did not see it. He summoned Drs. O'Toole and Morse who live about a block from the depot. Dr. Morse is the Great Western's local surgeon. Dr. O'Toole arrived in his car first and took the injured man to his home in his car. The doctors soon found that the injuries were so serious that death was inevitable.

It is known that it was Mr. Conklin's custom to stand in front of the facing the train. The truck and Mr. Conklin were thrown over against the depot about at the north waiting room door.

Mr. and Mrs. Conklin moved to Eagle Grove from Clarion about five years ago. The deceased was born in Ohio. Fifty years ago, last October 4th, he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Davidson at Filmore, Mo. The widow and four children survive, Mrs. Jesse Williams, Clarion, J. L. Conklin, and Mrs. John Prehm, Eagle Grove, and Ray Conklin. There are also 18 surviving grandchildren and one great grandchild.

While funeral arrangements have not been completed at the time this is being written, it was expected the funeral would be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the Wilson Funeral Chapel.
