Martin Aarthun Arthur
14 April 1891 ---- 11 August 1937

Martin Arthur, 46, Norway township farmer, took his own life by hanging himself to a rafter in his barn Wednesday morning. He left his breakfast table about 8:30, went to the barn and there consummated the deed, somewhere around 9:00 o'clock. The body was discovered at 10:30. The Arthur home is in Norway township, 3 miles south and 13 miles west of Kanawha.

Arthur complained to members of a threshing crew with whom he worked all day Tuesday, that he was having severe headaches. Tuesday night he aroused his sister, who keeps house for him, and told her he thought the sheriff was after him. In his room were found five checks, each written for $40. He was in no financial difficulty and there was no reason for his fear that he might be arrested. He seemed to be all right Wednesday morning. Breakfast was served late, finished about 8:30. After he left for the barn, that was the last seen of him alive. Dr. Walker, county coroner, was called and termed the death a case of suicide.

Arthur was unmarried and his sister kept house for him. A brother, Thos. Arthur from northeast of Eagle Grove, survives, another brother from near Kanawha, and a brother, Chris, living in Minneapolis also survive.

Funeral services will be held in the Wilson Funeral Chapel, Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock with the Rev. T. J. Severtson in charge.
