George E. Correll
14 November 1851 ---- 14 April 1939

George E. Correll died last Friday morning after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Correll was the first chief train dispatcher of the Northern Iowa Division of the Northwestern railroad. He came to Eagle Grove from Clinton where he had been employed by the company as operator and dispatcher in 1881.

Mr. Correll was very active in the early activities of Eagle Grove. When he came here there was practically no town at all. The Northwestern set out a box car which was his first office. As the town grew, Mr. Correll became one of its leading citizens. He was a charter member of the I. O. O. F. lodge and of Bower Lodge A. F. & A. M. He served as the chief officer of both organizations as well as in the same capacity in the K. of P. order. He was a prime mover in the building of the Masonic Temple and was the guiding counselor in the erection of the Episcopal church here some 30 years ago. He had a firm faith in the future of Eagle Grove and built the Correll Block, now owned by the Knights of Columbus lodge and S. M. Reider.

When Mr. Correll reached the age of 70, he was pensioned by the Northwestern, and has made Eagle Grove his home since that time. Mrs. Correll died on November 3, 1938. One son survives, Lafe E. Correll of Casselton, N. D., and one step-daughter, Mrs. S. V. Weiser of Detroit Lakes, Minn. One son died in infancy, and Hobart G. Correll died in August, 1937.

George Eugene Correll was born at Stamford, Ontario, Canada, Nov. 14, 1851. At an early age he moved with his parents to Pennsylvania, and later to Clinton, Iowa. On May 3, 1881, he was united in marriage with Edna Conant. He passed away Friday, April 14, 1939. Funeral services were held at the Wilson Funeral Chapel, Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Stockley of the Fort Dodge Episcopal church in charge. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.
