Imelda Nesteby age 85 of Decorah, IA passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2024, at WinnMed in Decorah.

A celebration of life will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Helms Funeral Home, 306, E. Water St. in Decorah. Burial will follow in St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery.

Imelda (Mel) Bernice Nesteby (Sutton) was born November 16, 1938, the daughter of Lawrence and Grace (Malanaphy) Sutton in Decorah, IA. She married James Alberts July 14, 1958, who died on January 17, 1981. She married Emmett Nesteby on December 3, 1983.

She graduated from Decorah High School in 1956 and later attended Mt. Mercy University. Later in life she attended NICC in Calmar, where she served as class president. Imelda, along with her first husband, owned and operated Alberts Plumbing and Heating in Decorah. Imelda and her second husband Emmett Nesteby moved to Lansing in 1999 where she worked in real estate sales at Lansing Land and Homes until her retirement. Imelda was active in many community organizations including Beta Sigma Phi for over 65 years, the Boys Scouts, Troop #68 and the Decorah Chamber of Commerce. Imelda was a lifetime member of St. Benedicts Church.

Imelda enjoyed crafts, creating greeting cards, baking (especially bread), fishing, hunting for mushrooms, canoeing and camping. She loved everything outdoors including camping trips to Canada and Alaska. She and Emmett spent many winters in Texas and enjoyed making many lifetime friends.

She is survived by her husband, Emmett Nesteby, her children, Mike (Beth) Alberts, Tijeras, NM, Pat (Sandy Wagenknecht) Alberts, Lansing, Tim Alberts, Lansing, Tom Alberts, Decorah, Gene (Suzanne) Alberts, Onalaska, WI and Becky Alberts, Decorah, six stepchildren, a sister-in-Law Dorothy Sunday, Decorah and many grand and great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her first husband James Alberts, her parents Lawrence and Grace Sutton, her brothers Mark and Vince Sutton, her son Daniel Alberts, and daughter-in-Law Debra Alberts.
