Anita Evelyn Imoehl, 88, of Decorah, IA, formerly of Luana, IA, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, July 26, 2024, at WinnMed in Decorah with her family at her side.

Visitation will be held at Helms Funeral Home in Decorah, IA, on Friday, August 9, from 5:00-7:00 pm. Visitation also will be held prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Benedict Catholic Church on Saturday, August 10, beginning at 9:30 am.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, August 10, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Decorah, IA.

A private burial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, masses may be requested, or memorials may be sent to the WinnMed Home Health and Hospice or St. Benedict Catholic Church, Decorah, IA.

Anita was born November 6, 1935, to James “Jake” and Eleanor (Busche) Reicks on the family farm near St. Lucas, IA. She was baptized, confirmed and graduated from high school at St. Luke Catholic Church and school in St. Lucas, IA.

On June 1, 1957, she was married to Merlin Victor Imoehl at St. Luke. The couple farmed together near Festina until 1961 when they purchased their farm near Luana where they dedicated themselves to building their farm and raising their family. In 1990, they moved to Postville, IA, and then in 2008 to Decorah, IA.

Anita farmed alongside Merlin, taking an active role in working on and maintaining the farm. She also served her faith as a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, IA, where she was a member of the Rosary Society and a religious education teacher.

Anita will be missed for her love of cooking and was known for her potato salad, rhubarb and strawberry jams, pies, and cookies. She also was an accomplished seamstress and loved to garden and care for flowers. Anita was able to share these abilities with others for many years as a 4-H leader. She loved to play cards, and dance to polka music, although the waltz was her favorite. Throughout her life and numerous activities, at her core was her undeniable love and devotion for her family.

Those left to cherish her memory are her six children: Cheryl (Martin) Evans of Bloomington, MN, Linda (Gary) Hooper of Luana, IA, Donna Imoehl of Eden Prairie, MN, Ellen Imoehl of Decorah, IA, Bob (Denise) Imoehl of Luana, IA, and Beth (Scott) Feickert of Tigard, OR; seven grandchildren: Alison (Austin) Warren, Zyann Hooper, Kara (friend, Alex Larsen) Hooper, Brandon (friend, Jessica Anderson) Imoehl, Grant Imoehl, Seth Feickert, and Greta Feickert; great-grandchildren: Crosby, Monroe, and Steele Warren; sisters: Edith Shindelar, Monica Brooks, and Verna (Al) Chasey, and sisters-in-law: Florence Reicks, Arlene Wilusz, Leonilla Imoehl, and Corrina Steinlage and many nieces and nephews.

Anita was preceded in death by her loving husband, Merlin V. Imoehl of 60 years; Parents: James and Eleanor (Busche) Reicks; parents-in-law: Frank and Angela (Hageman) Imoehl; siblings and spouses: Leo Reicks, Cyril Reicks, Arlene and Leo Bodensteiner, Denis and Judy Reicks, Alvin Shindelar, Roger Reicks, Loras Reicks; in-laws: Jerome and Alvina Imoehl, Valeria and Gordian Lensing, Eleanora and Guido “Pete” Franzen, Ralph Imoehl, Nilus and Jeanette Imoehl, Laverne Imoehl, and Leo Steinlage.
