The son of Marvin and Donna (Casey) Hovden, Daryl was born on January 1, 1955, in Decorah. He graduated from Decorah High School, where he was an excellent student and outstanding wrestler, placing 6th at the state tournament his senior year in 1973.
After graduation, Daryl began working for Carlson & Wicks Concrete Construction and after a few years he decided to try it on his own. With little collateral but a big dream in his heart, he formed Daryl Hovden Construction. He relocated to Atlanta, Georgia in the early 1980s because that’s where the opportunity was. At the height of his success, he was the biggest user of concrete in the entire state of Georgia.
When his family began to grow and the yearning to come back to his roots got stronger, Daryl returned to Winneshiek County to farm. He enlisted help from his brothers to make Southern Accent Farms a successful grain and beef operation.
When he wasn’t in the fields or driving the semi, Daryl could be found playing cards, grabbing dinner at the Black Angus in Prairie du Chien, or gambling at the casino in Dubuque with his good friend, Gary Fulsaas. He loved to joke around, especially with those he just met. His nonchalant delivery often made it difficult to separate jokes from reality, but he sure did love seeing the look on people’s faces when they realized he was just giving them a hard time. Speaking of Gary – has anyone called to let him know his sheep are out.
In April of 2024, Daryl became a grandpa to Walker John Hovden. Before his grandson was born, he enjoyed telling those he saw around town how excited he was to meet his grandson. He knew how many weeks along his daughter-in-law was before she did, and frequently called her “just to check in” and make sure she and the baby were doing alright. He loved seeing his grandson every chance he had, even if it was just for a few minutes at a time. Daryl would always try to get Walker to give grandpa a smile, put a finger in his little hand to “test how strong his grip was” and remind him, “stretch and grow, grandson!” Daryl was looking forward to taking Walker for his first ride in the semi and seeing him in the flannel onesie he had bought him for harvest time.
Daryl loved his family and friends very much and will be greatly missed.
Daryl is survived by Linda Hovden. Sons: Andy (Maren Kraling) Hovden and Jake (Melanie) Hovden and their son, Walker. He is also survived by his five siblings and their families: David Hovden, Dan (Sally) Hovden, Denise (Gary) Baumler, Dean (Rhonda) Hovden and Dale (Tina) Hovden, along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Karmen John Hovden and his parents: Marvin and Donna Hovden.
