JOHN ENRIGHT PASSES AWAY.
Has Been Decorah Resident Since 1869—Helped Transport Union Soldiers During Rebellion.
Patrick John Enright, who has been a resident of Decorah since 1869, passed away Monday noon, the 3rd inst, at his home on Day street, aged 76 years, 5 months and 29 days.
Mr. Enright was a native of Limerick, Ireland, where he was born on August 4, 1836. He came to this country with his parents in boyhood, residing in Illinois until at the age of fourteen when he became a student in a college in Texas. He continued to reside in the south for about twenty years and engaged in railroading, being a conductor on the Missouri Pacific road. He was engaged during the civil war in transporting Union troops between St. Louis and Sedalia, an undertaking that was very dangerous, but it remained for him to be injured in the ordinary pursuit of his business. While stepping onto his train as it was moving one day in 1869 he slipped under the wheels and one foot was crushed, necessitating amputation of a part of the leg. On recovering he came to Decorah to reside and for many years was engaged in the grocery trade on the site of E. J. Parman’s drug store. For a number of years he has lived in retirement and during the past twelve months or more was confined to his home, most of the time to his bed. Mr. Enright was a man of more than usual intelligence, a great reader, well posted upon the news of the day. In politics a Democrat, in his religious faith a Catholic, no one ever knew him to wave in his loyalty to either. He is survived by his sister, Miss Kate Enright, and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Dr. Enright of St. Joseph, Mo., who has made her home here for several years. Albert and Charles Enright, nephews from St. Joseph, are here to attend the funeral, which will be held this morning at nine o’clock at St. Benedict’s church, Rev. J. Hawe officiating.
