OBITUARY.
E. G. Opdahl, one of the last of the early pioneers who settled in Springfield township, died at his home in the fifth ward early last Saturday morning, in his sixty-ninth year. In his demise the community loses a man of upright Christian character whose life was marked by deeds of kindness and sympathy and upright living.
Mr. Opdahl was born in Norway on October 21, 1844, and came to America with his parents in 1848. They lived for about two years in Dane county, Wis., and then came to Springfield township, Winneshiek county in the summer of 1850. Here the deceased grew to manhood and for many years engaged successfully in farming. His integrity was recognized by his election for terms covering thirteen years to the office of justice of the peace, and thereafter for some years he was township trustee. On retiring from the farm he made his home in Decorah and here he has since resided. He was married October 16, 1880, to Nellie Christian and she, with one daughter, Mrs. Ella Fox of Worthington, Minn., survive him. Early in life Mr. Opdahl untied with the Methodist church and the fellowship then established was maintained in consistent Christian living throughout the reminder of his life. The funeral was held Tuesday at 12:30 at the Methodist church, Rev. Lackland officiating and interment was made in the Norwegian Methodist cemetery on Washington Prairie.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he died Jan. 11, 1913. He is buried in the Washington Prairie Norwegian Methodist Cemetery.
