THE SILENT REAPER.
M. H. MERRILL.
On Monday last shortly after the noon hour M. H. Merrill passed away at his home on East Water street, after a long illness. Some ten years ago Mr. Merrill’s health began to fail and he consulted eminent specialists who advised him that he had but a short time to live. In spite of this admonition during the intervening years he has enjoyed long periods of apparent comfort, and was able to mingle in moderation with his friends and associates. The past year he has been a great sufferer, but he has borne his affliction with patience. Death came to him as a release when he had attained an age beyond the allotted span of life.
Milton H. Merrill was born August 25, 1830, in Oneida county, N. Y. In the year 1855 he was married to Miss Sarah Hardiman and in the same year they set out for the west in search of a new home. Decorah, then a thriving village attracted them and here they made their home until 1868, Mr. Merrill engaging in the lumber and grain trade. In that year they bought a farm a short distance north of town where they resided until 1893, when they returned to Decorah. The same year Mrs. Merrill passed away. For some years Mr. Merrill again engaged in grain buying, but he was compelled to relinquish business cares by the illness that made his last days those of an invalid. During his long years as a resident here the deceased took an active part in the business and social welfare of the community, and as an ardent Republican was one of the wheel horses of the party, particularly in the early days.
Mr. Merrill is survived by four children,--Mrs. I. W. Brunt, with whom he made his home, C. M. Merrill of Eau Clair, Wis., LaMotte Merrill of Los Angeles, and Wm. Merrill, residing in Oregon. He is also survived by one brother T. B. Merrill of Chicago, and one sister Mrs. Baker of Davenport.
The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the house, Rev. M. Willett officiating, and the remains will be placed in the receiving vault at Phelps cemetery.
