Mrs. Caroline Held, one of the pioneer residents, passed away Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Reihle. Caroline Hess was born at Baden, Germany, June 13, 1830, but in her early childhood came with her parents to New York. After remaining there for a while they moved west, settling at Old Mission, where they lived for about two years, after moving to Sumner township. In 1851 she was married to John Held at Milwaukee, Wis. Her husband precede{d} her in death ten years. To Mr. and Mrs. Held were born eleven children, five of whom survive, who are Chas. of Aberdeen, S. D., Mrs. Anton Reihle, Mrs. Frank Reihle of near Spillville, Mrs. Joe Reihle and Mrs. Henry Reihle of this place. She is also survived by twenty grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. For the past ten years she has made her home here with her daughter. The funeral took place to-day from the Catholic church at 9:30 a. m., with interment at the St. Clemence{sic} cemetery near Spillville. The pall bearers were her grandsons, George, Frank, William, Edward, Carl and Elmer Reihle. The funeral was largely attended, showing the last tribute of respect paid to one of its oldest and most highly respected residents.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows her name as Carolina. She died Jan. 28, 1912. She is buried in St. Clement Cemetery.
