Mrs. Rev. B. A. Johnson came from her home at St. Paul Saturday to be with her mother during her last moments, and arrived only about 10 minutes before she passed away.- -
The community was shocked Sunday morning to learn of the death of Mrs. O. L. Saxvik Saturday evening, although she had been ill for some length of time, and her death expected at any time. Still the message bringing the sad news was received with sorrow. Ingeborg Maria Hovde was born Jan. 18, 1852, in Highland township, on the old Stoen place, and in this connection it is interesting to know she was the first white child born in Highland township. Alexander’s history of Winneshiek Co. gives her the distinction of being the first white child born in the county, but this is hardly correct. She was reared to womanhood in this community and was married to O. L Saxvik June 30, 1875. She was the only surviving child of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Hovde, her only sister dying several years ago. Her mother died thirty eyars ago, and her father is still living and in good health, as a representative of this good pioneer family. Mrs. Saxvik was a lady in all respects, a refined and generous soul, a willing helper in the church and other public enterprises, a true Christian always had a kind word, and a smile for everybody. She was a good mother, a model wife, a true friend and above all a true Christian. She will be greatly missed in the church, in the social life, and above all in her own home. Although she had to suffer untold agonies at times the past two years, she bore it all patiently and would never complain, and she was content to return to Him who gave her life, and who rules all our destinies. She leaves to mourn her demise, her aged father, her husband and her five children Lewis, Gilbert, and Olga at home, Mrs. Rev. B. A. Johnson of St. Paul, Minn., and Henry of Bowman, N. D., besides a lot of relatives and friends. She goes to join for all eternity, her mother and sister, and her two children whose bodies lie at rest in the Big Canoe cemetery, and whose souls are with God. Services will be on Wednesday at 12 o’clock at the house. We say rest in peace, and God grant we may all so live that we will be with you when the death angel calls us.
