OBITUARY.
On Saturday morning last after an extended illness due to the infirmities of old age, Mrs. William Thurlow Baker passed away at the family home on west Main street.
Mrs. Baker’s maiden name was Elizabeth Vincent. She was the elder daughter of Gen. William Vincent of the British army and was born August 15, 1821 at Barrackpore, India. Her education was secured in Ireland where she was sent at the age of thirteen and resided with relatives. She later returned to India where she was married to Lieutenant William Thurlow Baker on January 15, 1840. Col. Baker retired from service in 1864 and the family went to England. Early in 1865 they came to America and for a few months resided in Canada. In May of the same year they chose Decorah as their permanent home and here built the family homestead that has since been their residence. Col. Baker died nearly twelve years ago. His widow is survived by five sons and one daughter,--William Vincent and Eldred R. Baker of Chicago, Arthur Baker of Miles City, Mont. Charles K. G. and Frank W. P; Baker of Decorah, and Mrs. Charles V. Lloyd, who resides in England. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon att hesic} Methodist church, Rev. W. M. Lemen officiating, and the remains were placed in the receiving vault at Phelps cemetery.
In this long and eventful wedded life Mrs. Baker was a brave and loyal companion to her husband and to her family a devoted mother. For many years she has not been able to leave her home to any extent but her acquaintances were always glad to go to her because they had learned to know the sincerity and worth of her friendship.
