Hi Holly and all other posters who ask questions about Myrick Cemetery:

Firstly, I have visited Myrick Cemetery several times since I was a teenager. I used to live in Chillicothe itself, which is less than a mile from the cemetery, but I live about 3 and a half hours away from the town now, although my parents and some relatives still live there.

Secondly, to Linda S (the poster here), you should have visited the cemetery during the early fall or winter when the weather is bearable for you to be outside, there would not be a lot of mosquitoes to bother you!! I took very good pictures of my ancestors' gravestones at Myrick Cemetery last winter. That early afternoon was sooooo perfect weatherwise for me to take pictures. There were NO mosquitoes to bite me as it usually did during the summer. Smile!!

Thirdly, my maternal grandmother was President of the Chillicothe Cemetery Association for some years. She is dead now since 1990 so you cannot contact her for information regarding both cemeteries (Chillicothe or Myrick), although the president of that association is reponsible just for Chillicothe. I am not exactly sure who is taking care of Myrick Cemetery and its well-being, but I think a landowner whose land is adjouring Myrick Cemetery is probably being paid to mow the grass and so forth at the cemetery. I would need to ask my mother about that.

4th-- I am posting the list of who's being buried at Myrick Cemetery that is copied from a copy (not the original one, though)that was in my grandma's possession. I believe she used this for the purpose of knowing which grave to put a U.S. flag to honor past war veterans on Memorial Day as she and the past and current presidents of the association usually did at Chillicothe Cemetery. She just wanted to honor the veterans over at Myrick Cemetery as well as the Chillicothe Cemetery.

This is the copy from the original which was typed by two women who charted Myrick Cemetery back on May 28, 1981. These women are June Crane Ware and Julie Hall Campbell. They described the cemetery as "located in Cass township in section 36. The nearest town is Chillicothe, Iowa, in Wapello County, on the south side of the Des Moines River. The cemetery lies east of the town about a half-mile. A lane about two city blocks long takes off to the south to reach the cemetery. It cannot be seen from the main rock road. It has been nicely cared for at Memorial Day for the past two years when I have visited there." End of quote.

Speaking of these two women, their names are not familiar to me therefore they most likely do not live in Chillicothe but from somewhere nearby.

According to the family, he died in

1890.) He was my great-great-grandpa.

He was born in Indiana in August 1822

and died in Wapello or Davis County,

Iowa, on August 3, 1890 at the age of

65 years.

(near big tree was a double stone for the infant daughter and infant son of W. and I. Judson. The girl died August 29, 1885, while the boy died November 26, 1881) (My Note: those children were the children of Wilford and Ibby [Snell] Judson)

(One stone has a Holy Bible carved on it but no names. Next to it was a broken stone with only the word "aged 78Y 3M) (My Note: Those are my ancestors, Daniel and Caroline [Medlem]Judson. Daniel was born on August 6, 1809, and died aged 78 years 3 months on November 6, 1887. Caroline was born on December 26, 1818, and died on April 16, 1890. Those graves mentioned here are Daniel's and Caroline's which are proved through other records, including WPA records for Caroline's date of death and Caroline's obituary and funeral records as well as Caroline's newspaper obituary)

The latest burial appears to be that of Mary Melissa Baxter in 1957. This area was also known as "Jimstown."
