George Downs Spears was born in Keb, Wapello County, Iowa on 18 July 1899 and died in Ottumwa, Wapello County 8 July 1970. He worked for John Morrell and Company.

He married Villetta Castle (Cassill) on 30 July 1935 at Moberly, Randolph County, Missouri. There is some difference in the spelling of her last name. According to her marriage records and the obit of George Spears her maiden name was Cassill. According to her obituary her maiden name was Castle. According to obits, they had no children.

Villetta Castle (Cassill) was born on 4 Dec 1904 at Ash Grove, Wapello County and died in a traffic accident on 6 July 1966 at Ottumwa. she was the daughter of Thomas Castle (Cassill) and Edna Reynolds. She was a 2nd grade teacher in the Cardinal Community School District (Eldon, Iowa).

According to a news article about the accident, she was driving in Ottumwa and ran head-on into a truck. George suffered chest injuries in the accident.
