Marie H. Gardner

Marie H. Gardner, daughter of William and Ella Hughes Comer, was born April 26, 1899 near Floris and died early the morning of Saturday, January 28, 1989 at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant at the age of 89.

Most of her life was spent in the Selma community. She was a farm wife and later operated the Selma telephone office for a number of years. She was a member of Selma United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

On December 26, 1917 Marie married Dale R. Gardner at Bloomfield. He died October 28, 1970.

Surviving are two sons, Melvin and his wife, Virginia of Fairfield, and Michael and his wife Donna of Mount Pleasant, a daughter, Mary Alice Porttorff and her husband Donald of Perry, 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Also surviving are a half-brother, Wilbur Comer of Mechanicsville and two half-sisters, Pauline Roberts of Ottumwa and Berniece Thomas of Boomfield.

Preceding her in death were a daughter, Shirley Swift, a brother, Marion Comer, two half brothers, Vernon Comer and Joe Salter and a great grandson.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 30, 1989 at 2:30 p.m. at Pedrick Funeal(err) Home, Douds, with Rev. Gerald Caughron officiating. Interment was in Mount Moriah Cemetery north of Douds. Memorials were established for the Heart Fund and the Salem United Methodist Church.
