Elmer D. Nelson, 69, Bonaparte, died at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua. Death was unexpected.

Nelson was born August 1, 1919, in Salem. He was a resident of Bonaparte for 43 years. He worked for 34 years for Van Buren County road maintenance. He was a member of the Bonaparte American Legion and a World War II Army veteran.

On Dec. 15, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo.; he married Betty Ritchart, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, James E., Temple City, Calif., and Wesley Gene, East Moline, ill.; one daughter, Judith Ann Nelson, Arcadia, Calif.; four sisters, Ilene Young, Greatview, Wash., Agnes Schiller, Fort Madison, Lucille Mountcastle, Sierra Vista, Calif., and Cleta Cocherelle, Farmington; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Blanche Buttrick Nelson, and one brother.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hofbauer Funeral Home in Farmington with the Rev. Fred Malone officiating. Burial will be in Bonaparte Cemetery.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hofbauer Funeral Home in Farmington. The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Saturday evening.

A memorial has been established for the Bonaparte First Responders.
