Donald R. Benge

Donald R. Benge, son of William Wallace and Mildred McClure Benge, was born August 21, 1946 at Floris, and died Tuesday evening, August 29, 1989 near Selma when a tree he was cutting fell on him.

He grew up in Douds, graduated from Van Buren Community High School in 1965, and served in the United States Army in 1966. He was a farmer, operated a trenching and backhoe service with his brother, and was an owner and racer of stock cars. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the International Motor Contest Association, and the Van Buren County Cattlemen's Association.

Don married Susan Lambert March 10, 1967 at Selma. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Carl, a student at the University of Dubuque, and Brad, a Cardinal High School student; two brothers, Ronald LaVerne Benge, Birmingham, and Lawrence "Shorty" Benge, Douds; two sisters, Jean Ferguson, Ottumwa, and Linda Nason, Douds. His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 2, 1989 in Christ United Methodist Church, Douds, with Reverend Stephen Metcalf-Conte officiating. Interment was in Iowaville Cemetery near Selma. A memorial was established.

Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds, was in charge of arrangements.
