Mabel Miller Greenfield

Mabel Miller Greenfield, daughter of Arthur and Nellie Bonar Hoskin, was born November 10, 1908 at Cantril and died the morning of Saturday, September 23, 1989 at the home of her daughter in Des Moines at the age of 80.

She grew up and graduated from high school at Cantril and married Edgar Miller there on June 20, 1926. They operated cafes in Van Buren County as well as Hotel Manning in Keosauqua, which she continued to operate after Mr. Miller's death in 1951 until her retirement. On August 19, 1978 she married Robert Greenfield in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They made their home in Indianola. He died December 25, 1988.

Mabel was a member of First United Methodist Church, Indianola, a Past Matron of Lynds Chapter, Order of Eastern Star and a member of Beer-Barker Unit, American Legion Auxiliary, both in Keosauqua. She was the first woman to serve as President of the Iowa Restaurant Association and as a member of the Iowa Natural Resources Council.

Throughout her life she was active in the Republican Party locally and at the state and national levels, and was a Past President of the Iowa Federation of Republican Women.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Lou Mairet, Des Moines, four grandchildren, Stephen Mairet, Woodstock, Ill., Michael Mairet, Des Moines, Paula Lovejoy, Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and Becky Davis, Pahoke, Florida, six great grandchildren, a brother, Arthur Dale Hoskin and a sister, Annabelle Kinnamon, both of Savannah, Iowa, other relatives and friends. A brother, Monte Hoskin preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 26, 1989 at 1 P.M. at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with Rev. Robert Kem officiating. Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cantril. A memorial was established for the Keosauqua City Park.

County remembers long-time owner of Hotel Manning

Mabel Miller Greenfield, 80, who owned and ran the historic Hotel Manning for 31 years, died at the home of her daughter in Des Moines, September 23.

Mabel was in the restaurant business 47 years and was also very active in the Republican Party.

In 1944 Mabel and her husband, Edgar, bought the hotel. He died in 1951 and for 24 years, she ran the hotel herself before 1975, when she was joined in the operation by her family.

In 1968, she was honorary Sgt. at Arms during the 1968 Republican National Convention.

In recent years, Mabel made her home in Indianola.

She was the first woman president of the Iowa Restaurant Association, she was state president of the Republican Women and also a member of the board of the Van Buren Foundation, Inc., who honored her with a plaque for her efforts at preservation of historic sites.

A memorial was established for the Keosauqua City Park.
