George W. Gares

George William Gares, the son of John William and Dora Green Gares, was born July 3, 1894 at Anson, Missouri, and passed away Friday, February 19, 1988 at the Clark County Nursing Home at the age of 93 years.

He married Julia H. Nixon February 19, 1920 at Kahoka. She preceded him in death November 9, 1968.

Survivors include three sons, Harold Gares and wife, Celesta, and Clifford Gares and his wife, Lola, of Kahoka; Hilbert Gares and wife, Laneta, of Monroe City, Mo.; two daughters, Lola Gares of Ft. Madison, Ia and Mrs. Velda Zollars and husband, Cecil of Keosauqua, Iowa; one brother, Derrill Gares of Keokuk, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Elwood (Mattie) Vance of Farmington, Iowa, and Mrs. Florence Kaylor of Kahoka, Mo.; 10 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

He preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers, one sister, a daughter in infancy and four grandsons.

George was a Veteran of World War I serving in the Army. He saw action in France in the battle of the Argonne Forest in the Watch on the Rhine and was in the army of occupation in Germany for one year following the signing of the Armistice. He was a member of Herman Blum Post No. 192 of the American Legion at Kahoka. He was also an active member of the Kahoka United Methodist Church as long as his health permits.

He had farmed in the Anson and Asbury communities until his retirement in 1964. At that time he and his wife moved to Kahoka where he continued to be in avid gardener. He had been a resident of the Clark County Nursing Home the past four years.

Services were held Monday, Feb. 22, 1988 at 11 a.m. at the Kahoka United Methodist Church with Rev. Beryl Cragg, officiating. Interment was in Anson Cemetery with Military Rites by Herman Blum Post No. 192 of the American Legion, Kahoka, Missouri.
