MERTENS, WALTERS, BARTLETT, HYDE, STANFORD, COCHRAN

Mrs. Alger (Zoe) Mertens, 80, Gulfport Miss., formerly of Fort Madison, died at 7:05 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Gulf Coast Community Hospital, Biloxi, Miss. She had been seriously ill nine days.

Mrs. Mertens was born April 19, 1907, at Milton, Ia. She lived in Fort Madison 55 years before moving in 1985 to live with daughters in Davenport and Gulfport. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic in Fort Madison. She was a registered nurse with the Fort Madison School District and also served as a nurse at the former Hospitality House Nursing Home in Fort Madison for a number of years.

She and Alger Henry Mertens were married Nov. 28, 1929, in Fort Madison. He died Aug. 23, 1983.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Monica Walters, Davenport, and Mrs. Gary (Theresa) Bartlet, Gulfport; a brother, Glen Hyde, Memphis, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Donald (Phoebe) Stanford and Mrs. Blue (Frankie), both of Marion, Ia.; five grandchildren, several nephews and nieces.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. He parents were Edwin and Mary Etta Hoskins Hyde.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church. The Rev. John Hyland, assisted by the Rev. Dan Mackey, will officiate. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

The body is being brought to the Barr Memorial Chapel where friends may call after noon Tuesday, where the family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
