Barbara Denning Bishop

Barbara Denning Bishop, 85, 1416 Ave. D, died at 2:40 a.m. today, May 31, at Fort Madison Community Hospital. She had been in failing health two years and seriously ill two weeks.

Mrs. Bishop was born Sept. 12, 1902, in Fort Madison and was a lifelong resident. She worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, Middletown, and at the former Troy Laundry in Fort Madison. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the auxiliary to Hartman Dawson Post 1805 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On Feb. 25, 1922, in Fort Madison, she was married to George L. Bishop, who died Oct. 13, 1960.

Surviving are three sons, George A. Bishop, Houston, Texas, Dale W. Bishop, Tunnel Hill, Ill., and Steven Bishop, Fort Bragg, N.C.; six daughters, Mrs. Carroll (Ruth) Farrell, Farmington; Mrs. Jim (Betty) Thompson, Fort Madison, Flo Bishop, with whom she made her home, Mrs. Marge Gunn, Oxnard, Calif., Mrs. John (Dolores) Markey, Dallas City, Ill., and Mrs. Joe (Arleta) Thompson, Danville; two sisters, Mrs. Leo (Bertha) Eid, Fort Madison, and Mrs. Dorothy Baker of Florida; 35 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two children, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Her parents were George and Amanda Sherwood Denning.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Church. The Rev. Robert McAleer will officiate. Burial will be in Soldiers' Circle of Oakland Cemetery.

Friends may call after noon Thursday at the King-Lynk Funeral Home where the Christian Wake Service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

A memorial is being established. Contributions may be made at the King-Lynk Funeral Home.
