Former county auditor dies Saturday

Former Van Buren County Auditor Charles Paul McBratney, 74, of 404 W. Oak in Milton died Nov. 28, 1987, at Ottumwa Regional Health Care Center, 1001 E. Pennsylvania.

He was born Dec. 5, 1912, in Milton to Charles and Bertha Henthorn McBratney. After graduating from Milton High School, he worked for the Citizens Bank of Milton for four years and served as Van Buren County Auditor from 1937 to 1945. He operated the McBratney Grocery Store in Milton for 13 years and then by the State Savings Bank of Cantril for 20 years, retiring as head cashier in 1979.

A World War II veteran, he was a member of the Milton United Methodist Church, American Legion Russell Strait Post No. 483, and a 50-year member of the Celestial Masonic Lodge in Douds.

He married Dorothy Gould on May 13, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She died Nov. 8, 1987.

He is survived by a daughter, Karen Huffman of Urbana, Ill., and three grandchildren.

The services were held Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1987 at Milton United Methodist church, the Rev. Andrew Rubenking officiating. Burial, with military rites were in Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton.

A memorial has been established to the Sunnyside Cemetery Association.
