Attends Funeral Former Valleyite

Mrs. H, A, Barnard, Miss Carol Jean Hough and Mr. Frank Wiggerman went to Faribault, Minn., Sunday to attend the funeral of Mrs. James Hough on Monday morning. Mrs. Hough was at one time a resident of Rock Valley and will be remembered by many of the older people. Mrs. Hough was the mother of the first white child, George Hough, to be born in Calliope, now a part of Hawarden.

RESEARCH NOTES

Nothing more than a paragraph on her funeral was found in the Faribault newspaper.

Her death certificate 1940-MN-013394 (informant [illegible initials] Hough, Faribault) has Margaret Hough, resident of 844 S.W. 4th Ave., Faribault; widow of James Hough); born March 10, 1853 in Indiana; father Daniel Phalzgraf, born in Germany; mother’s name not known to the informant; died at 12:30 p.m. October 18, 1940; cause, paralysis agitans [Parkinson’s disease], duration 6 years.

Her FindaGrave.com page has Margerete Pfaltzgraff Hough, born 10 March 1853, died 18 Oct 1940, buried in Calvary Cemetery, Faribault, Minn. Father Daniel Pfaltzgraf (1806-1885). Spouse James Charles Hough (1853-1940, married 1874). One child listed: Daniel John Hough (1880-1940). There is a photo of the joint headstone of James C. and Margerete Hough.

The Indiana Marriages index on Ancestry.com has Maggie Pfalzgraf marrying James Huff in Valparaiso, Indiana, on 21 Sep 1874.

The 1900 U.S. census for St. Helena, Cedar County, Nebraska shows James Hough (46), born Dec 1853 in Indiana, a farmer, married 25 years; wife Maggie (47), born March 1853 in Indiana, mother of 8 children, 6 living; son Charles (23), a teacher, born in Indiana; and sons Daniel (20), a teacher, George (17), a farm laborer, Aloysius (11), and Harry (7), all born in Nebraska.

In the 1910 census James (57), Margaret (57), and their son Harry (17) are living in Rock Valley, where he owns the city livery. In the 1920 census James C. (66) and Margaret (68) are living in Shakopee, Minnesota, where he is a confectionary merchant. The 1940 census shows Margaret A. Hough (87), widowed, living with her son Charles B. (63), a wholesale lumber salesman, and his wife Catherine A. (60) in Faribault.
