From the Alton Democrat, September 6, 1940:

WELL KNOWN ALTON MAN SUMMONED
FUNERAL ON FRIDAY, JAKE FRIEDMANN
Died Suddenly at His Home Tuesday Morning

The Alton community was shocked Tuesday morning by the sudden death of Jacob Friedmann, prominent farmer, who passed on from a heart attack at about nine o’clock. He had apparently been in good health and had assisted the previous day with the annual parish picnic of St. Mary’s church.

Mr. Friedmann, whose fine farm adjoins Alton, was an outstanding farmer of the community. For nineteen years he served on the board of the Orange City Co-operative creamery, residning last year because of other duties. He was secretary-treasurer of the East Orange township Farmers Union and a past president of the union. He was a man of progressive ideas and wide interests and there is far-reaching regret and sympathy for the family over his untimely passing at the age of 56 years.

He was born in Alton on May 28, 1884, and his pioneer parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Friedmann, are still living. He attended the Catholic schools at Granville, where the family lived for a time, and at Alton. He was married to Miss Catherine Schneider at St. Mary’s church, Alton, on January 19, 1909. Six children were born to the couple: Veronica, Joseph, Virginette, Raymond, Lillian and Cecil, all at home.

Mr. Friedmann is survived by his wife and children, his aged parents, and by four sisters and one brother, namely: Mrs. Fred Odenbrett of Elrose, Minn.; Mrs. J. N. Schneider, Newberg, Oregon; Mrs. O. J. Kaschmitter, Roscoe, Minn.; John Friedmann, Salt Lake City; Mrs. O. E. Lower, Tigard, Oregon. Mrs. Kaschmitter arrived here Wednesday morning and will be followed by her family. Other relatives are expected today.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9:30 at St. Mary’s church of which Mr. Friedmann was a loyal member.
