From the Alton Democrat, August 30, 1940, Hospers news:

Mrs. K. Van Meteren passed away after a long illness on Aug. 22 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. Oldenkamp.

Mrs. Van Meteren, nee Arrieaantze Buskamp, was born in South Holland, Noordeloos, Netherlands on July 27, 1852. She was married to K. Van Meteren in Holland and they came to America 51 years ago. Several children were born to this union. Mr. Van Meteren preceded his wife in death 19 years ago. Mrs. Van Meteren had been in poor health for quite some time, having broken both her hips.

Funeral services were held at the Christian Reformed church Saturday afternoon with Rev. W. Bajema of Sheldon officiating.

From De Volksvriend, August 29, 1940, Hospers news (translated from the Dutch):

Mrs. Klaas Van Meeteren died quietly at about 3:00 Thursday morning after an illness of 16 months. She had fallen twice and broken a hip each time.

Adriaantje Beuzekom was born in Noordeloos, South Holland province, and had celebrated her 88th birthday on July 27. In the year 1889 she came with her husband and children to America. 18 years ago she lost her husband by death, and also had to bring two grown sons to the grave. In recent years she has been lovingly nursed in the home of her daughter, and she was patient in her suffering.

She leaves behind 5 sons and 2 daughters: Marinus, Dick, John, Henry and Aart, all of the Sheldon area, Mrs. Bert Oldenkamp of Hospers and Mrs. Herman Reinsma of Des Moines, the latter of whom was unable to be at her mother’s deathbed and funeral. The funeral was held on Saturday in the Christian Reformed church, under direction of Rev. Wm. Bajema of Sheldon. Her remains were placed in the family plot at Sheldon.

RESEARCH NOTES

Her death certificate (informant John Oldenkamp) has Adriana Van Meeteren, widow of Klass Van Meeteren; born in the Netherlands July 27, 1852; parents Bastien Busenkom and Maggie De Young; resident of the U.S. 50 years and of Hospers 10 years; died at 6:30 a.m. August 22, 1940; cause, "senile complications"; other conditions, fractured hip due to a fall at her home on August 15, 1940; buried at Sheldon.

FindaGrave.com and the O’Brien County cemetery indexes on GenWeb show Klaas Vanmeeteren (1849-1921) buried in East Lawn Cemetery, Sheldon, but have no records for Adriana/Jennie. (Klaas’ FindaGrave page lists only two children, Jennie Oldenkamp and Walter, and no wife.)

WieWasWie.nl has a marriage index record for groom Klaas van Meeteren, born in Noordeloos, parents Wouter van Meeteren and Adriaantje Slob; bride Adriaantje Beuzekom, born in Moordeloos, parents Bastiaan Beuzekom and Magje de Jong; married in Noordeloos 3 October 1873.

The family was not readily located in the 1900 U.S. census. In 1910 they were living in Sheldon: Klass Van Matern (60), married 37 years, immigrated 1889, naturalized; wife Jennie (59), mother of 13 children, 9 living, immigrated 1889; and two children, Jennie (36) and Henry (25), both immigrated 1889. In 1920 Klaas (70), Jennie (69), and sons John (39) and Henry (35) Van Meeteren are still farming in Sheldon; all immigrated in 1889 and were naturalized in 1894. In 1930 Jennie Van Meetran (77), widowed, is living in the Holland Home for the Aged in Sheldon. In 1940, as Jennie Van Meeteren (87), she is living in Hospers with her widowed daughter Jennie Oldenkamp (66).
