From the Rock Valley Bee, October 4, 1940:

Mann Baby Lives Only Few Hours

Marry Melvina Mann, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Mann, was buried in St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery in Alvord, Wednesday morning.

The baby was born by the Caesarian method at the Osceola hospital, of Sibley, Ia., at 9:35 o’clock, Monday morning, Sept. 23, and lived until 7 o’clock that evening. The child weighed 8 lbs. at birth. This was the second child born to Mr. and Mrs. Mann. The first child, a girl, lived only a few hours after birth.

Doon friends of Mr. and Mrs. Mann, both of whom are very fond of children, have the deepest sympathy of the entire community.—Doon Press.

Her death certificate shows her to have been born on September 23, 1940 in the Osceola County Hospital at Sibley, lived 9 hours, and died at 9:30 that evening of respiratory failure due to "respiratory center disfunction." The parents’ usual residence was Doon, Lyon County.
