Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation without the family present will be on Friday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Arthur Rodney was born on February 8, 1933, in Orange City, the son of William John and Henrietta (Plender) Ter Horst. He was raised near Orange City, where he attended Northwestern Academy.

He was united in marriage to Lorna Grace Sandbulte, a daughter of Gerrit and Matilda (Mouw) Sandbulte, on September 1, 1959, in Carmel. They made their home on a farm near Orange City, where they raised their two daughters. He worked at many businesses in Orange City in his early years, including Silent Sioux, the Sioux County Engineer’s Office, and the Phillips 66 Gas Station, before moving to their farm south of town. In October of 2012, he and Lorna moved from their farm to a home in Orange City.

Mr. Ter Horst was a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City. He also served on the board of the Cooperative Elevator in Orange City. He enjoyed traveling and camping, and in his younger years working with horses. More recently, he and Lorna spent time wintering in Texas and Arizona and challenging his grandchildren to ‘hot’ ping pong games. Despite his health issues and numerous surgeries and hospitalizations, he always remained positive and never complained.

Survivors include his wife of more than 62 years, Lorna, of Orange City; two daughters and their husbands, Karen and David Moss, of Orange City, and Kristen and Dennis Van Oort, of Ireton; five grandchildren, Dan and Jocelyn Moss, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Shannon and Matt Higdon, of Ankeny; Erin and Cody Nelson, of Garden City; Nick and Holly Van Oort, of Ireton; and Jenna and Jake Peterson, of Milford; ten great-grandchildren, Rylee, Calli, and Bennett Moss; Molli and Quinn Nelson; Karsen, Kolten, and Kingsten Van Oort; and Tucker and Tenley Peterson; a sister, Geralyn Kraai, of Rock Valley; a brother and his wife, Stanley and Dorothy Ter Horst, of Sioux Falls; a brother-in-law, William C. Van Zanten, of Orange City; Lorna’s sister and her husband, Marvella and Peter Dean Vander Zwaag, of Orange City; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margene Van Zanten; and two brothers-in-law, Don Kraai, and Vernon Sandbulte, and his wife, Joanne.

Memorials will be given to Samaritan’s Purse.
